Installing LM Berea Grass in a New Home Garden: What to Expect

Moving into a new home is exciting — but the bare, compacted soil that builders leave behind is rarely inspiring. Installing a lawn is one of the most transformative things you can do for your new garden, and LM Berea is the ideal choice for most Cape Town homes.

Here's exactly what to expect from the process.

Before Installation: Ground Preparation

The quality of your ground preparation determines the quality of your lawn. This is the step that most DIY installations get wrong — and it's why professional installation produces better results.

What We Do to Prepare Your Ground

1. Remove existing material

Builder's rubble, old grass, weeds, and debris are removed. This is essential — laying LM Berea over rubble or compacted builder's soil will result in a poor lawn.

2. Soil assessment

We assess your soil type (sandy, clay, or loam) and drainage. Cape Town soils vary significantly — from the sandy soils of the Atlantic Seaboard to the clay soils of the Northern Suburbs. Each requires a different approach.

3. Soil improvement

Where needed, we add compost or a soil conditioner to improve soil structure and fertility. Sandy soils benefit from organic matter to improve water retention. Clay soils benefit from gypsum and organic matter to improve drainage.

4. Levelling

The area is levelled to ensure even water distribution and a smooth, attractive lawn surface. Low spots that collect water and high spots that dry out quickly are addressed at this stage.

5. Final preparation

The soil is raked to a fine tilth and lightly compacted to provide a firm, even surface for the LM Berea rolls.

Installation Day

Fresh Grass Delivery

LM Berea is cut fresh on the morning of your installation. We never use stored or old grass — freshness is critical for successful establishment.

The Installation Process

Laying the rolls: Rolls are laid in a brick-bond pattern (like brickwork) to avoid continuous seams. Each roll is placed tight against its neighbours with no gaps.

Pressing and rolling: The rolls are pressed firmly into the soil to ensure good contact. Good soil contact is essential for rooting.

Edge trimming: Edges are trimmed cleanly against paving, walls, and garden beds for a neat, professional finish.

First watering: We water the lawn thoroughly immediately after installation. This is the first critical watering — it settles the rolls into the soil and begins the rooting process.

How Long Does Installation Take?

A typical new home garden installation (50–200m²) is completed in a single day. Larger gardens may take 2–3 days.

After Installation: The First 3 Weeks

This is the most critical period for your new lawn. What you do in the first 3 weeks determines whether you get a thick, healthy lawn or a patchy, struggling one.

Week 1–2: Daily Watering

Water once or twice daily — morning and late afternoon. Keep the soil consistently moist. The rolls need moisture to root into the soil below.

Don't walk on the lawn during this period. The rolls need to root undisturbed.

Week 3: Reduce Frequency

As roots establish, reduce to every other day. You can start to see whether the roots are establishing by gently lifting a corner of a roll — if it resists, the roots are growing.

Signs of Successful Establishment

  • Rolls resist when you try to lift them (roots are growing)
  • Grass is green and growing
  • New growth is visible at the tips of the blades

Signs of Problems

  • Rolls lift easily (insufficient watering)
  • Grass turns yellow (under-watering or poor soil contact)
  • Rolls dry out and curl at the edges (under-watering)

If you see any of these signs, increase watering immediately.

Your First Mow

Wait until the lawn is fully established before mowing — typically 3–4 weeks after installation.

First mow height: Set your mower to 40mm for the first mow. Don't cut too short — the lawn is still establishing and needs leaf area for photosynthesis.

Subsequent mowing: Mow to 30–40mm every 2–3 weeks during the growing season.

What Your New Lawn Will Look Like

Week 1: The lawn looks neat and green but the seams between rolls are visible.

Week 2–3: The seams begin to close as the grass spreads. The lawn starts to look more uniform.

Week 4–6: The seams are largely invisible. The lawn looks like a single, continuous surface.

Month 2–3: The lawn is fully established and looking its best. This is when you'll really appreciate the lush, fine texture of LM Berea.
