LM Berea is Cape Town's most popular lawn grass — and for good reason. Here's everything you need to know about what it is, why it thrives in Cape Town, and how to care for it.
What is LM Berea?
LM Berea (Dactyloctenium australe) is a warm-season lawn grass native to the coastal regions of KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. Its full name — Lawn Mix Berea — reflects its origins in the Berea area of Durban, where it was first widely cultivated.
In Cape Town, LM Berea has become the go-to lawn grass for homeowners who want a lush, soft, low-maintenance lawn that performs in conditions where other grasses struggle — particularly in shaded gardens, under trees, and alongside walls and buildings.
Its fine, dense blade structure gives it a premium appearance that Kikuyu and Buffalo grasses simply can't match. It's the grass you see in well-maintained Cape Town gardens, school grounds, and upmarket residential estates.
Key Characteristics
LM Berea tolerates up to 60% shade — far more than Kikuyu or Buffalo. It performs under trees, along walls, and in gardens that receive only a few hours of direct sun per day.
The blade is narrow and fine, giving LM Berea a lush, carpet-like appearance. It's comfortable underfoot for children, pets, and bare feet — a true family lawn.
Once established, LM Berea requires significantly less water than Kikuyu. This makes it ideal for Cape Town's dry summers and water restrictions.
LM Berea grows at a moderate pace — slower than Kikuyu. This means less frequent mowing, lower maintenance costs, and more time to enjoy your garden.
Unlike Kikuyu, which goes dormant and brown in winter, LM Berea holds its green colour through Cape Town's mild winters — keeping your garden looking good year-round.
LM Berea spreads by stolons but is far less aggressive than Kikuyu. It stays within its planted area and won't invade garden beds, paving, or neighbouring lawns.
Shade Performance
Cape Town gardens are full of mature trees, high walls, and buildings that cast long shadows. Most grasses — including Kikuyu — simply fail in these conditions. They thin out, go patchy, and eventually die.
LM Berea was built for exactly this. It can thrive with as little as 40% direct sunlight per day, making it the only practical lawn grass for many Cape Town gardens.
Even in areas with 4–5 hours of sun, LM Berea will establish a thick, dense sward that stays green and lush. No other warm-season grass comes close.

For most Cape Town gardens — especially those with shade — LM Berea is the clear choice.
Care Guide
LM Berea is low-maintenance — but the first few weeks after installation are critical. Follow this guide for a perfect result.
Water once or twice daily — morning and late afternoon. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. This is the most critical phase.
As roots establish, reduce frequency. Water deeply to encourage deep root growth. Avoid shallow, frequent watering.
Water deeply 2–3 times per week in summer. Early morning is best to reduce evaporation and fungal risk.
Cape Town winters provide natural rainfall. Reduce watering significantly — LM Berea doesn't need much in the cooler months.
LM Berea grows slower than Kikuyu. Mow to 30–40mm height. Never remove more than one-third of the blade in a single cut.
Apply a balanced lawn fertiliser in spring and again in early summer. Avoid over-fertilising — LM Berea is not a heavy feeder.
