The Complete LM Berea Grass Care Guide for Cape Town

LM Berea is one of the most low-maintenance lawn grasses you can choose for a Cape Town garden. But "low maintenance" doesn't mean "no maintenance" — and the first few weeks after installation are critical.

This guide covers everything you need to know to keep your LM Berea lawn looking its best, from the day it's installed through every season.

The First 3 Weeks: Establishment Watering

The establishment period is the most important phase of your LM Berea lawn's life. Get this right and you'll have a thick, healthy lawn for years. Get it wrong and you'll have patchy, shallow-rooted grass that struggles through summer.

Week 1–2: Daily Watering

Water once or twice daily — morning and late afternoon. Your goal is to keep the soil moist to a depth of at least 5cm. The grass rolls need to stay in contact with moist soil to root down.

Signs you're watering correctly:

  • Soil feels moist when you press your finger in
  • Grass stays green and doesn't wilt
  • Rolls don't lift at the edges

Signs you're under-watering:

  • Grass turns yellow or brown
  • Rolls start to curl at the edges
  • Soil feels dry below the surface

Week 3: Reduce to Every Other Day

As roots begin to establish, start reducing frequency. Water deeply every other day, encouraging roots to grow deeper in search of moisture.

After 3 Weeks: Normal Watering Schedule

Once established, switch to the seasonal watering schedule below.

Established Lawn Watering Schedule

Summer (November–March)

Water 2–3 times per week. Water deeply each time — aim for 20–30 minutes per zone with a sprinkler, or until the soil is moist to 10cm depth.

Best time to water: Early morning (5–8am). This reduces evaporation and gives the grass time to dry before evening, reducing fungal risk.

Avoid: Watering in the heat of the day (water evaporates before it reaches the roots) or late evening (wet grass overnight encourages fungal disease).

Autumn (April–May)

Reduce to once or twice per week as temperatures drop and evaporation decreases.

Winter (June–August)

Cape Town winters provide natural rainfall. Reduce watering significantly — once per week or less, depending on rainfall. LM Berea doesn't need much water in the cooler months.

Spring (September–October)

As temperatures rise and growth resumes, gradually increase watering frequency back to the summer schedule.

Mowing

How Often to Mow

LM Berea grows slower than Kikuyu, which is one of its great advantages. During the growing season (spring and summer), mowing every 2–3 weeks is typically sufficient.

In winter, growth slows significantly and you may only need to mow once a month or less.

Mowing Height

Mow to a height of 30–40mm. This is the ideal height for LM Berea — it keeps the lawn looking neat while maintaining enough leaf area for photosynthesis.

Never remove more than one-third of the blade in a single cut. If your lawn has grown long, raise the mower height and cut in stages over a few weeks rather than cutting it all at once. Scalping LM Berea causes browning and stress.

Mower Type

A rotary mower works well for LM Berea. Keep the blades sharp — blunt blades tear the grass rather than cutting it cleanly, leaving a ragged appearance and making the lawn more susceptible to disease.

Fertilising

LM Berea is not a heavy feeder, but it benefits from fertilising twice a year.

Spring Fertilising (September)

Apply a balanced lawn fertiliser (e.g., 3:1:5 or similar) in early spring as growth resumes. This gives the lawn the nutrients it needs for the growing season.

Summer Fertilising (December/January)

A second application in early summer maintains growth and colour through the hottest months.

Avoid over-fertilising. Too much nitrogen causes rapid, soft growth that is more susceptible to disease and requires more frequent mowing.

Watering After Fertilising

Always water thoroughly after applying fertiliser to wash it into the soil and prevent leaf burn.

Scarifying (Dethatching)

Over time, LM Berea can develop a thatch layer — a build-up of dead grass stems and roots between the soil surface and the green blades. A thick thatch layer prevents water and nutrients from reaching the roots.

Scarify (dethatch) your LM Berea lawn once a year in spring. Use a scarifying rake or a mechanical scarifier to remove the thatch layer. The lawn will look rough immediately after scarifying but will recover quickly with watering and fertilising.

Weed Control

A thick, healthy LM Berea lawn is its own best weed defence — dense grass leaves little room for weeds to establish. The best weed control is good lawn care: correct watering, mowing, and fertilising.

For persistent weeds, use a selective lawn herbicide that is safe for LM Berea. Always read the label carefully and avoid broad-spectrum herbicides that will kill your lawn.

Common Problems and Solutions

Yellow or Brown Patches

Possible causes:

  • Under-watering (most common)
  • Fungal disease (usually circular patches)
  • Thatch build-up
  • Compacted soil

Solution: Check watering first. If the soil is moist and patches are circular, treat with a fungicide. If the lawn is generally thin and yellow, scarify and fertilise.

Lawn Not Rooting After Installation

Cause: Insufficient watering during establishment.

Solution: Increase watering frequency immediately. Lift a corner of a roll — if the soil beneath is dry, you need to water more.

Thin or Patchy Growth in Shade

Cause: Too much shade for even LM Berea to handle (more than 70% shade).

Solution: Thin out overhanging branches to let in more light, or consider ground cover plants for very deep shade areas.
